So I got to meet Tim and hear him speak at SAS Institute in Cary, NC yesterday. What a treat! After 4 years of emailing, we finally got to shake hands and talk a bit.
Needless to say, his talk was fantastic -- well-researched, passionate, from the heart and humorous.
I have always tried to find the little things that I can do to a make a difference in terms of conservation. My most recent one is as simple as using one hand towel instead of two after washing my hands in a restroom that doesn't have air dryers. So what if you can't quite get your hands TOTALLY dry with one....the breeze from opening the door to leave will probably finish drying them for you!
Well yesterday, after hearing Tim speak, I was back at the office and grabbed two towels instead of one after washing my hands. I literally said, out loud, "sorry Tim." It was like I was asking for forgiveness from God. Kind of funny and not earth-shattering, I know. The point is, Tim has taken it upon himself to make a difference, to get inside of people's heads and to be a guy who gets people to change.
Saying to the audience, "If not you, then who?" is poignant and it works. Well done, my friend!

I've got the one-towel-dry down, but just recently. What took me so long? Now I'm trying to add in the technique of quickly getting my hands wet, turning off the tap to lather, and just running the water next to rinse. Unless there's some reason hygiene-wise not to do this, why not?
Trick is Just add new little things, one by one. A couple of days ago I started doing the one-towel-thing myself, and surprise! it works just fine. Now I'm going to try to get into the habit of turning off the water while lathering my hands, then turning it back on to rinse?
