Meet Aveda: In Business For Good // 06.17.2008

Here's a short excerpt from CNBC's TV Special: The Responsibility Revolution.

It is part of the network's series of specials on business innovation. In this clip, you'll see a segment about Aveda based on the research from my new book (Saving The World At Work). You'll see me at the end of the clip commenting on Aveda as well as weighing in on Al Gore VS Wal-Mart (who is making a bigger... More »

Is printer friendly Earth friendly? // 06.05.2008

One of the points of my new book (Saving The World At Work, Sept 2008) is that we are printing more pages than ever. Document printing has become one of our eco-villains, especially for knowledge workers.

In fact, we print one piece of paper every eight minutes, and the number rises annually. Why? Abundance of information (Internet) combined with widespread availability of fast (and cheap)... More »

If not you, then who // 06.04.2008

Here's an excerpt from my Q/A after my keynote address at the Meeting Professionals International annual education conference in 2008.

Give up your riches for a hero

The topic? If not you, then who? Who will do the right thing that needs to be done?

A recession friendly green strategy // 05.29.2008

I don't believe that we'll be in a recession forever. I believe that followed by these lows, will be higher highs – hopefully built on reality and not greed.

Until then, though, all of us need to innovate our biz-strategies to account for the current gloomy economic climate. Money is tight, oil is still expensive and inflation is everywhere.

If you want to make a difference to the planet,... More »

Talk the walk! // 05.25.2008

I was going to save this video clip (a rant on my part, shot off my deck in LA) for the book launch in September -- but I cannot contain the message! Please check out this video and pass it on. I'll likely repost it in September again. Talk the Walk Video Clip

Adopt a weekly Eco-Innovation // 05.24.2008

Whether you are a company, or just an individual, you must continually innovate to maximize your green-ness. The best way to do this is by focusing on a single weekly innovation. Think about everything you do as you do your workaday, and isolate areas where you can reduce your impact on the planet.

This week's innovation is to reduce the printing that I create via my documents. Frequently, we... More »

The not so easy rider // 05.22.2008

I read an interesting article in today's LA Times (Inconvenient Truths About Motorcycles and Smog) that illustrates the complexity of being green or environmentally friendly.

To some, it's simple: a green car is a car with high MPG. Raise the MPG car over car (or through retrofit or innovation) and you are more green. With that logic, it makes sense that motorbikes are way greener than even a... More »

Don't email your people when they are recovering (on vacation) // 05.21.2008

When I worked at Yahoo, I put my employee's vacation days into my calendar to remind me to leave them off threads or BCC/CCs. When there was an email that they would eventually need to see or be copied on (when they got back), I would part it in the draft folder, then send all of them the day they returned.

The research I conducted for my Email Etiquette training program indicates that a person would rather get twenty emails fir... More »

The fallacy of Gone Green // 05.14.2008

Over and over again, I see marketing announcements by companies that claim that they've "gone green!"

How did they do it? They've made their business "a little less bad." If they make cars, they increased fuel efficiency by 20%, so now their SUV is green. (At 19 miles per gallon, that is a laugher). They've replaced the ink in their labels with soy, so now they are green. (Again, why haven't... More »
