The paperless office of the future is an idea of the past. In reality, more paper than ever gets printed. Computers, internet content and bandwidth have combined to kill more trees, release more toxins and waste more energy than ever. Why? We've incorrectly designed our information intake... More »

Save the humans // 07.30.2008

It occurred to me last week that we are being very self-centered when we say, "Save The Planet". The planet will continue on without us. It will shrug us off like a batch of fleas. Cockroaches, ants, bees and other species will likely take over if the environment gets much warmer or toxic. The planet survived the ice age and it will survive global warming. We, on the other hand, could... More »

Hire Eco-Friendly Employees // 07.18.2008

Ed Catmull, Pixar and Disney Animation Studios president, once asked me a question: "What's more important, great ideas or great people?" His answer, always people.

He said you could take a perfect idea, give it to four incompetent people, and they'd screw it up every time. If you want your company to go green, your first step is to start looking for green-friendly employees. Timberland... More »

Eat green food // 07.17.2008

Today I read an article about Ted Turner's chain of 'green restaurants'.

He's got the right idea -- clean up one of the biggest eco-offenders in business America, the eateries. They produce incredible amounts of solid waste, bring food in from long distances and purchase products produced in unsafe or unsustainable manners. For decades, we've focused on the nutritional issues related to dining... More »

Pay the freight! // 07.14.2008

I recently made the decision to, whenever possible, use eco-friendly business supplies.

Yesterday I was ordering business cards and researching bookmarks for my book tour as giveaways. I found a few 'green printers' such as Green Printer Online. They offer business and promotional cards that are made responsibly from recycled paper, using safe inks.

Here's the catch: They cost about 100-200%... More »

Stand for something! // 07.12.2008

What do you stand for? What are you willing to fight for? What are you doing to make the world a better place? All of is need a personal mission that helps instruct us on the job, with family and in society. If you don't really stand for anything, why would anyone ever follow you, mentor you, or try to help you?

I stand for compassion. At work, in family life and now in our relationship with... More »

Stop the flow of dead trees coming to your office // 07.11.2008

Even if they go straight to the recycling bin, that isn't good enough. Recycling, according to the authors of Cradle To Cradle, should actually be called 'downcycling', because the materials get less and less useful with each pass. And recycling requires high energy use.

What to do? Go to the EcologicalMail site and get yourself taken off the lists. Moreover, when someone leaves your company,... More »

Turn out the lights, the party's over // 07.09.2008

Go ahead and use all you want, you thought, we'll make more! Those days are over. Now, gas and electricity are more expensive than ever. Their production threatens the health of our ecosystem.

As a leader, you need to set an example to others by practicing extreme energy conservation. It starts with the lights. When you leave a room, turn them off. Ask for your facilities group to look... More »

Adopt a partner // 07.08.2008

Stanley Marcus Jr. did just that for broadcast.com back in 2000. His company, Neiman Marcus, had hired us to webcast their annual launch of their big book luxury holiday catalog. Even though I was just a services vendor, the first time he met me, he decided to take me under his wing and give tough but necessary business advice. He schooled me on customer management, branding, personal attire... More »

Get on the new cutting edge // 06.29.2008

In her wonderful book, The High Purpose Company, Christine Arena makes the argument that companies need to adopt causes that are so tied to business, that the company's value proposition would fall apart without it.

Finding the right one is a matter of innovation and in my mind, on the bleeding edge of the business world.

Check out a short clip from one of my recent talks, commenting on this:... More »
