Promote wellness at work // 04.09.2009

I think that company wellness programs are MONEY.

They create healthier employees and reduce insurance claims.  Many companies find that the few year return on investment is three or four to one!

They are also a source of innovation and and leadership at work.  When ex-Sierra Club president Adam Warbach helped Wal-Mart teach store managers eco-sensibility -- he realized that wellness programs were the missing link.  Wh... More »

Saints and Sinners: A Theory // 02.18.2009

In the next few years, we are going to see two kinds of companies emerge from this mess:  Saints and Sinners.

A very recent survey indicates that CEOs are less popular than politicians -- a sign of things to come.  In my book, Saving The World At Work, I predicted that the Responsibility Revolution would reshape branding as we know it.

My research indicated that the 2002... More »

Check out a video book brief on BNET // 01.29.2009

Late last year, I spent a morning in SF, shooting a video book brief for BNET, a leading business and leadership network produced by ZDNET. I'm really proud of how it turned out.  It helps explain the responsibility revolution and how you can be a part of it!

Check out the video: Saving The World on BNET-TV

Let's go from Green to Blue // 01.09.2009

I am a huge fan of Adam Werbach (former President of the Sierra Club).  Back in 2004 he declared that "environmentalism is dead" and in 2006 he went to work for Wal-Mart.  Crazy guy? Not loyal? Hardly.  He's a rock star in my book (literally).

In April of 2008, Webach gave a very important talk at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco.  The content of the talk is... More »

Just say NO to layoffs // 12.18.2008

Innovation is all about creative solutions to pressing problems.

During this economic environment, we need to innovate (cut costs without killing quality) to survive. Layoffs are an easy (non-innovative) way to do that.

But at what social, moral, financial and long-term cost?

Cari Tuna wrote an excellent article that shows how companies have cut the overhead without cutting... More »

Are layoffs socially responsible? // 12.11.2008

How many layoffs has Southwest Airlines had?  Zero.

How many for SAS Institute.  Same number.

Why?  Both founders/CEOs are willing to do ANYTHING to avoid them.  They don't see layoffs as a natural response to economic downturns, usually taken to please value investors on Wall Street.  Southwest was a market rebel and SAS Institute stayed private.

In my view, socially responsible companies ... More »

It starts with certification! // 12.08.2008

In LA, your business will soon be able to apply for "Green Business Certification."

Read today's story: City Of Los Angeles To Certify Green Businesses

Why is this important?  Once a system is setup to recognize business practices as green, then a credible instrument exists to differentiate one company from another in a competitive situation.

If two companies are competing for business, let the certified green o... More »

Unleash the power of one person with purpose! // 11.25.2008

This week, I had two features in national newspapers that highlighted the central theme of Saving The World At Work:  One person, filled with purpose, can change the world.

Read both of those stories:

Harnessing The Power Of One (Investor's Business Daily)

Frequent Flier (The New York Times)

Share positive business results from responsible business practices // 11.21.2008

One of the best ways you can help others on this website is by sharing your business/social success stories.

Many of us want to implement socially responsible programs at work ranging from people to community to planet.  The problem is, with the current state of the economy, we need to tie it to the business.  In many cases, you'll need to demonstrate that your ideas is either free... More »

Look for the upside in doing good (and you'll do well) // 11.13.2008

John Mackey's Conscious Capitalism conference/conclave was a magical event last week in Austin.

For three days, about one hundred likeminded souls gathered to present, listen and interact around the theme of business as agent of common good.  There were so many great ideas, I'll likely be reporting on them for months.

One of the key takeaways came from John Mackey's closing remarks at the... More »
